Origin/Class: Rune Mage – Arcane Channeler
Ryze is a 7-cost champion with one of the most unique mechanics in TFT Set 16. His defining strength lies in his ability to change the entire effect of his spell depending on the active Region in your team composition. This makes Ryze one of the most flexible champions in the whole set — capable of bursting, zoning, utility, or sustained AoE depending on how you build around him.
With powerful scaling, wide-area magic damage, and strong adaptive effects, Ryze becomes an exceptional late-game carry that can fit into virtually any lineup.
Unlock Requirement:
To summon Ryze, you must meet 2 requirements:
- Reach level 8
Ryze will only unlock when the player reaches Level 8 or higher. Below level 8, you will not be able to receive him. - Activate a total of 5 clans, including:
Targon + 4 other clans to have 5 lands, and this will activate the mechanism to unlock Ryze.
This is the most important factor in any Ryze team.
In the early game, your priority is to use the strongest comp possible to conserve health and maintain stability. This will help you hit level 8 naturally, then transition to a maxed-out comp at level 9. Some Ryze variants are harder to run, but you’ll get used to them as you gain experience.
✅ HOW TO UNLOCK RYZE – TFT SET 16
Ryze is a 7-cost Unlockable Champion, meaning he WILL NOT appear in your shop unless you meet his specific Region/trait requirement.
Ryze belongs to:
- Origin: Rune Mage
- Class: Arcane Channeler
However, his unlock condition is tied ONLY to Rune Mage, not Arcane Channeler.
⭐ 🔓 Unlock Condition for Ryze
→ ACTIVATE 4 RUNE MAGE
Once your board reaches 4 Rune Mage, Ryze becomes unlocked and can now appear in your shop as a normal 7-cost unit.
❌ Without 4 Rune Mage → Ryze NEVER appears
✔ With 4 Rune Mage → Ryze CAN appear (unlock successful)
🎯 Important Notes:
✔ You only need to unlock him once
After Ryze appears and you buy him, you may drop down to 2–3 Rune Mage and still keep using Ryze normally.
✔ If you HAVEN’T bought Ryze yet and drop below 4 Rune Mage → he stops appearing
You must reactivate 4 Rune Mage to see him in the shop again.
✔ Standard 7-cost shop odds still apply:
- Level 7 → extremely low
- Level 8 → low
- Level 9 → highest chance
📌 Simple Example
If your team includes:
- Syndra
- Kassadin
- Jayce
- Hwei (as an example of Rune Mage comps)
→ You now have 4 Rune Mage → Ryze becomes unlocked.
Once purchased, you may change your comp and drop to fewer Rune Mages if needed.
🔮 Why does Ryze require unlocking?
Because Ryze is one of the most versatile 7-cost champions in Set 16, with:
- Runic Overload changing effects based on Region,
- powerful AoE AP damage,
- high adaptability,
- strong late-game scaling.
To avoid early-game imbalance, Riot restricts him behind the 4 Rune Mage unlock condition.

Ryze unleashes primordial arcane energy, dealing magic damage in an area.
This ability changes based on the Region you have activated, transforming Ryze into a completely different unit depending on your comp.
⭐ Spell Effects by Region (Region Variants):
Bilgewater – Saltwater Surge
Shoots a straight-line wave that explodes on impact, dealing splash magic damage.
Demacia – Radiant Arc Burst
Increases range and damage, leaving a lingering light zone that deals damage over time.
Freljord – Arcane Blizzard
Slows attack speed and freezes targets after 2 seconds, dealing bonus true damage.
Ionia – Harmonized Spellcraft
Empowers Ryze with bonus attack speed and mana regeneration whenever he casts.
Ixtal – Ancient Elemental Rune
Adds a random elemental effect:
- Fire: burns HP
- Lightning: chains to 3 enemies
- Earth: grants a shield
- Wind: increases attack speed
Noxus – Penetrating Spellstrike
Spell pierces through frontliners. Each cast increases Ryze’s damage by 10% (stacks infinitely).
Piltover – Hextech Overcharge
Every third cast deals 60% more damage and can generate Gold.
Shadow Isles – Soulbound Rift
Leaves behind a ghostly zone that drains enemy HP and heals Ryze.
Shurima – Sandstorm Ascendance
Knocks up enemies hit and deals extra damage to shielded targets.
Targon – Starbound Sanctuary
Heals the lowest-HP ally based on 12% of Ryze’s total spell damage.
Void – Unstable Null Surge
Ignores 35% Magic Resist and deals bonus true damage to the center target.
Yordle – Miniature Mana Burst
Shrinks enemies struck: reducing their damage by 15% temporarily.
Zaun – Toxic Tech Rune
Poison on hit, dealing magic DoT and slowing movement.
